Bloody horses

Sodding horses.

We did a bit of loading practice on Monday in the side loading box and Dino was really good so we planned to go the Water Meadows today for a ride.

Get up this morning and the first problem is that Raggy won’t come in from the field. Catch him fine, but a tree came down yesterday and he REFUSED to walk past it. Tried bringing both ponies in together as usual but he just planted and would not move. Bring Dino in (who ignores the tree except when we get quite close to it he jumps and goes OMG THAT TREE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THAT???? and when I say ‘come on’ he’s like *shrug* ok then) , give him breakfast and then spend 30 mins coaxing the ginger welshie in 3 steps at a time with a bucket of treats. Joy. As we get to the gate he barges past me through it and wrenches my shoulder. Thanks pony.

So we’re running about 30 mins late when I get to trying to load Dino….and he won’t have it. At. All. Will Not. NOPE NOPE NOPE. :wall: We spend 45 mins ‘discussing’ , it and he’s not having it. So we’ll try again… I did manage to get him into someone’s trailer with no fuss so he’s not forgotten that and he got lots of treats for that, but we need to go back and do the side-loader work again and it’s not gone in *sigh* Really frustrating! He managed to smack me in the face at one point and snapped my head back a bit so I have a sore upper spine to add to my wrenched shoulder.

Then on the way home a labrador jumped off a garage roof and nearly landed on my head!!! Dog unharmed. Owner and I had a small heart attack each. It did look a bit surprised about how far it had jumped but honestly, I could do without enormous dogs falling from the sky!!! 😮 😮 😮

Bloody horses, honestly. We only wanted to go on a nice ride!!

Brave pants

Two updates in one day!

Made Dino put his brave pants on this evening, with the help of a Tally safety pony. We went up the lane with the scary triangles and did some to and fro and having a sniff and snort and then stood around a bit and had a think. He’s not 100% and won’t put his feet actually on them, but by the time we were done he would calmly walk past the triangles on the left without jumping into oncoming traffic! So we’ll take that for the moment.

Then we played safety pony and took Tally back past the spot where he and Shona fell over in a scary freak losing their footing incident a few weeks back. So we were all very brave and we’re pleased with both of them. I’d still like to take him out with a friend a couple more times before taking him out on his own up the lane but I’m happy he’s calmer about it than last week!! :db:

Gallops again

My friend who bought a new horsebox a couple of weeks ago wanted to go out in it yesterday so we had a lovely trip to the gallops! Took a while to get Dino loaded; he just wasn’t convinced there was room in it for him really as it’s side loading but we got there in the end. Need to get her to park it up and do some practice in it really. He squished my hand at one point which is quite sore this morning, and managed to stand on my foot when he finally did understand what he was supposed to be doing so clearly we have some work to do between us!!!

Weather was weird – was amazingly sunny so I didn’t take a coat or anything and it randomly rained for half an hour so I got soaked. Did mean there was amazing rainbow action though!

As I suspected neither Dino nor Brambles will actually gallop without something to chase, but did have some lovely canters:

We left our friend Shona, who came along for moral support, with the camera hence photos!

He had another scary hack on the roads on Saturday, this time with M, so next goal is to get him back to behaving sensibly round traffic with a solid Tally pony escort I think.

Slightly too exciting

Well, yesterday was just that bit too exciting….

The lane up the side of the yard has recently been resurfaced. This means all the road markings have been repainted. The road has a bunch of chicane features to slow the traffic and it’s super narrow and a bit of a rat run. The chicanes have give way triangles. Terrifying, horse eating, give way triangles.

Now, we’ve been down a couple of times since the resurfacing and I think M has been down too and although he’s had a good look at them and a bit of a skitter he’s usually settled down by the third set of chicanes everything’s been ok. Yesterday, at the exact second he puts him foot on the terrifying give way triangle the builders working over the fence use an industrial nail gun to fix up something on the roof with a sound like a gun shot. 😮 At that point Dino’s poor over-stressed brain falls out and thus began a slightly too exciting 15 mins. There was traffic behind us and oncoming – he threw himself across into the other lane, span, reared, tried to bolt. I got him forward and calmed down a bit past the triangle. We let that traffic go, but he’s still tense.

At the second triangle we bump into the ponies from the London Equestrian Centre coming the other way down the lane from the field – three staff, nine ponies. This is also very exciting and he *almost* forgets his feet are almost on the paint. Until he realises and then has another melt down. We throw ourselves into the path of a mini but manage to get round that relatively ok and get to the top of the road where we have another fit and have to stand in on the wrong side of the road at the give way line to wait for a gap in the traffic to get out onto the Ridgeway.

We’re now back on familiar territory and I fully expect him to calm down. We have about 200 metres to do along the main road before a right hand turn into the quiet estate at the other end of the bridlepath and the way home. He does not calm down. He’s right on his toes, swinging him bum into the traffic and being really quite difficult. Pretty much a full on panic mode and has totally forgotten that actually everything is ok. So this, as you imagine is the *perfect* time for two pedestrians to attempt to ask me for directions!!!!!!!

Anyway, we get off the main road and there’s no traffic and he does, finally, actually calm down. We did a bit of walk and trot work round the quiet roads and he’s fine. Doesn’t bat and eyelid at any of the rubbish bins that he usually has a look at or the dogs that chase us down the road. So, all’s fine in that we get home in one piece but we will be going up the lane at a quieter point with a solid Brambles safety pony until he decides the paint is not horse-eating. I slightly wish he was more scared of moving traffic so he didn’t think throwing himself into it is an option!

I am pleased that actually throughout this whole incident I didn’t feel anxious or nervous or worried. I just sat there, with the reins in one hand so I could let the drivers know what they could do that would be helpful (no, London drivers can’t just look at a horse throwing itself around and think ‘maybe I should just stay back here out of the way’) and didn’t shorten the reins or do any of the things I might have done this time last year. So I suppose that’s nice. I’d rather not be finding these things out like this though!!!!

Hoping the rest of the week is a bit quieter and SUPER EXCITED for Why to come down next Tuesday and sort our saddles out for us! :db:
